Dormant Telecoms Numbers Rose To 48m In February, Says NCC

Dormant telephone lines in the country increased to
48,228,087 in February, from 44,665,145 in January, the Nigerian
Communications Commission (NCC) said on Thursday.
The Monthly Subscriber Data made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos stated that the figures had increased by 3,562,942 between the period.
The data showed that only 129,002,841 lines, out of the 177,230,928 connected lines within the period, were active.
It said that 41,125,297 out of the 48,228,087 inactive lines belonged to the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) operators.
The data said that the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA mobile) operators had 5,221,944 inactive lines, while the Fixed wired/wireless networks had 1,880,846 inactive lines.
The data also showed an increment of 1,042,261 active lines in February’s figure of 129,002,841, as against the 127,960,580 active lines recorded in January.
The data stated that from the February active figures stated above, the GSM operators had 126,246,648 working lines.
Also, the CDMA networks had 2,398,581 active numbers, while the Fixed wired/wireless operators had 357,612 lines, it said.
The data stated that the installed capacity in the sector rose by 538,903 lines to 247,771,162 lines in February, from the 247,232,259 line capacities in January.
NAN reports that installed capacity refers to the total infrastructure a network puts in place to accommodate a certain number of telephone lines, in order to avoid congestion or poor network quality.
